Say Goodbye to Pins, Hello to Hair Thread

August 24, 2008 by Courtney · Leave a Comment

Paula Patrice noticed a trend as she traveled the world modeling for top designers and retailers- simple thread was being used to hold hair in place and create unique, intricate hair styles. She created Hair Thread to bring this trend closer to home. This versatile tool replaces bobby pins, elastic, head bands, and every other hair accessory you’ve used with sturdy, specially designed thread. The Hair Thread Mix-n-Match Kit ($24.00) is a great way to get started. The kit contains three spools of thread in the colors of your choice, three standard needles, comb and a pro-clip. If you’ve never used Hair Thread, the step-by-step instruction booklet introduces you to the technique and helps you put a new twist on your hair style.

Be A Wax Artist!

Hair wax can add unbelievable texture and extreme definition- or, when used incorrectly, it can flatten your style in a matter of seconds! To apply hair wax without a hassle, try the following tips:

  • Look for a water-based wax, like Garnier Fructis Brilliantine Shine Wax ($3.99). It’s more pliable, which means no hardening or stiffness, and makes hair easier to style.
  • Less is more! Scoop out just enough to cover the pad of your finger. Remember, you can always add wax as you go!
  • Rub the wax between your fingers before applying to hair. This warms the wax, making it easier to apply, and also distributes it evenly across your fingers to avoid clumping.
  • For “blown back” or softer styles, lightly run your fingers through the hair to shape. For more intensely defined styles, try putting a small amount of wax on both hands, gripping the section of hair you are styling, and sliding both hands down the section from root to tip with ample pressure.

A Triple Threat! Ojon Restorative Hair Treatment

July 14, 2008 by Courtney · Leave a Comment

Are your bathroom shelves full of products meant to shine, condition and repair? Ojon Restorative Hair Treatment ($21.00, 1.35 oz) can be used three ways to make your hair more beautiful! Whether your hair is color-treated or natural, damaged or healthy, you can gain more manageable, silky hair.

For deep conditioning, warm a teaspoon-sized amount of product in your hands and apply through dry hair. Leave in twenty minutes and follow with you usual shampoo and conditioner. If you prefer a leave-in conditioner, work the product between your palms until it becomes a lightweight oil. Distribute evenly through towel-dried hair and style. Or, use the oil as a shine enhancer by smoothing a very small amount of dry, styled hair. The choice is yours!

Save Your Haircolor with PureOlogy

July 6, 2008 by Rhonda · Leave a Comment

Ah, summer. The mercury’s rising. Bright sunshine. Trips to the beach…

Dry hair. Fried hair. Faded haircolor. Yes, it’s a fact. At least, it was.

If you haven’t heard of PureOlogy, you will. A whopping 98% of my clients use PureOlogy, and I guarantee their haircolor when they do. Especially here in Texas, the sun is Public Enemy Number One for haircolor; the knockout brunette color you walk out of the salon with looks orange within 2 weeks, and those honey-blonde highlights look like they were painted on with White Out.

Not pretty.

Why does this happen? 2 reasons:

1. The sunlight that gives your kids their gorgeous natural highlights is also like bleach on color-treated hair.

2. The shampoo you’re using has a sulfate-based cleanser.

Sulfates have gotten a lot of flack recently. We’ve all gotten the forward in our inboxes warning us of the dangers of sulfate in our shampoo. Well, it’s not so serious that it’s going to give us cancer. But sulfates do strip haircolor.

PureOlogy was the first manufacturer to use sulfate-free cleansers almost 8 years ago. Other companies have followed suit, but I’m not crazy about the ones I’ve tried – and I try each one as soon as I can get my hands on it.

My training taught me that no shampoo, conditioner, or deep conditioning treatment can repair your hair. PureOlogy has thrown that out the window.

PureOlogy logoLet me tell you about my favorites in the line, the ones I use on the backbar and the ones my clients use are addicted to. (Each specific line is color-coded, and I use these colors with my clients to keep it simple.)

HydrateShampoo (purple bottle)

This baby has won tons of awards from the likes of Allure, Women’s Health & Fitness, Child, and dozens from industry magazines and associations. Ultra moisturizing without heaviness, the gentle scents of ylang ylang, bergamot, and patchouli make you feel like you’re at a spa. It’s also great as a body wash.

HydrateCondition (purple bottle)

The companion conditioner to HydrateShampoo is awesome. My clients can’t keep their hands out of their hair after I use it because it abolishes tangles; but it’s so light, all they feel is hair. It has 3 different peppermint oils, so it energizes the scalp and awakens the senses (I even joke that it clears my sinuses!).

PureVolume Shampoo and Conditioner (pink bottles)

My skinny-haired clients can’t get enough of this. It strengthens the hair with soy, oat, and wheat proteins, and it protects haircolor without making the hair flat.

NanoWorks Super Luxury System (brown bottles)

You’re probably using anti-aging skincare; now there’s anti-aging haircare, and PureOlogy was the first company to introduce haircare that addresses the needs of mature hair. The shampoo, conditioner, and Luxury Hair Masque are full of antioxidants like açaí berry, and strengthen the hair with mushroom proteins. My fave? NanoWorks Restorative Hair Treatment, an intensive conditioner that I promise will transform your hair.

Essentials System (green bottles)

This line includes specialty items that are, well, essential for color-treated hair. PurifyShampoo is your weekly chelating cleanser to remove any product build-up. ReconstructRepair is a protective treatment. ColourMax and InstantRepair are leave-in treatments that you MUST keep in your beach bag to block the sun’s harmful rays.

SuperStraight Smoothing System (blue bottles)

All you girls with curls will love SuperStraight. It’s super moisturizing and locks humidity out of your hair. It also protects your hair from damage from flat ironing, especially Relaxing Serum and SuperSmooth Hot Iron Protection.

DandruffScalpCure (silver bottles)

Brand new to the PureOlogy family of products, DandruffScalpCure (shampoo and conditioner) uses pyrithione zinc, which gets rid of those pesky little white flakes while saving your haircolor.

Stylers (yellow bottles)

The PureOlogy styling products are split into 3 categories: support, texture, and finish.

The support line includes gels both medium and firm hold, styling lotion, and mousse. NanoGlaze is a styling crème that uses nanotechnology to cut blow-drying time in ½. RootLift mousse doubles the volume of fine hair. My dad loves StylingLotion; he doesn’t blow-dry his hair, and it dries natural looking instead of hard and crispy.

In the texture line, DryShine, NanoWax, and TextureTwist can all be used on damp or dry hair for piecing, texturing, and adding shine.

The finishers include hair sprays in aerosol, non-aerosol, firm hold, and natural hold (working spray). Also in this line is the awesome GlossingMist, a shine enhancer that’s super-light and won’t make your hair greasy-looking. (Actually, GlossingMist and TakeHold non-aerosol spray are in clear purple bottles.)PureOlogy

What’s so special about PureOlogy?

· AntiFade Complex – keeps your color looking great with UVA/UVB sunscreens, Heliogenol, and Vitamins C and E.

· ZeroSulfate – PureOlogy’s proprietary blend of 6 extra gentle cleansers derived from coconut, corn, and sugar. They don’t contain sodium chloride, which can strip haircolor.

· Nanotechnology produces smaller, lighter, and stronger ingredients that can actually penetrate the hair shaft.

· PureOlogy products are chock-full of antioxidants, which fight oxidation – one of the main reasons haircolor fades.

Your hairstylist has probably told you that when you use salon shampoos and conditioners, you use much less than drugstore brands. I’m here to tell you that’s not always true – but with PureOlogy, you truly do use much less than any other shampoo or conditioner. Even for the thickest hair, a nickel-sized dollop of product is plenty.

Now, some of you may raise an eyebrow when you hear the suggested retail prices. For example, a 10-ounce bottle of Hydrate, Volume, or SuperStraight Shampoo has a $26 price tag (NanoWorks Shampoo is $50 for the same size). I usually give my clients a 2-ounce size to try before they make the investment.

Every one of my clients who tries PureOlogy can’t go back to their usual shampoo.

It’s that good.

When you decide to use PureOlogy, it’s usually more cost-effective to go with a larger size. For example, the 10-ounce, $26 shampoos are $54 in the 33.8-ounce sizes. That’s more than 3 times the shampoo at about twice the price.

I’d also advise that if you see PureOlogy at your local drugstore, don’t go there. Products purchased at drugstores or other similar retail outlets may not be the original, and they’re not guaranteed. I’ve even seen it locally sold at prices higher than suggested retail!

Now you know — don’t go another summer with fried, faded haircolor.
